Please See SUA’s Executive Board Statement on June 19, 2020 (Juneteenth):

Dear SUA Members and the broader UNC and Anthropology communities,

Our field is dedicated to uplifting the human experience, but right now, not every experience is given the recognition and respect it deserves. The Society of Undergraduate Anthropologists stands with the Black community and its fight for equity. We condemn and do not tolerate discrimination, oppression, or violence towards racial minorities and other marginalized groups. Injustice and violence are not relegated to history books; they continue to plague our country and campus. These issues run deep, but as burgeoning anthropologists, we can help identify patterns of oppression and give a microphone to muffled voices.

On this Juneteenth, we want to celebrate the strength of the Black community while supporting its ongoing battle for change. Our goal as an academic community is to help each other learn and grow. This year, Freedom Day carries extra weight as we consider the distance left until Black people attain true freedom in America. Black Lives Matter as do Black voices and we are committed to listening, empowering, and advocating.

This year, we are introducing new initiatives for diversity and inclusion:
More open dialogue at the end of meetings
Highlighting and celebrating the diversity of the department by featuring a wide range of anthropologists at professor coffee hours and alumni events
Finding opportunities that allow people of color to study what they are passionate about within the field of anthropology

We strive to create a safe, diverse, inclusive space for all within our organization to ensure that everyone feels welcomed and valued. If you have any suggestions or feedback you would like to share, we welcome your input.

Warmest regards,
SUA Executive Board
